Job Board Website in Samarkand: A Teardown and What to Fix

A job board website in Samarkand serves two groups of people. Job seekers want to apply quickly from their phones. Employers decide whether it is worth posting a vacancy here and paying for it. The site has to convince both sides, and the employer is the harder one to win over, because they are giving up money and putting their company's reputation on the line.

We looked at the website of one such job board in Samarkand. Technically it works fairly well: time to first byte is about 0.1 seconds, so the server responds quickly. But the overall audit score is 41, and the causes are not about speed. They are about what a visitor sees on the page and what they fail to find.

We are breaking down this particular site because its set of problems is typical for local classifieds and job portals. If you run a similar project, chances are you will recognize your own pages in this list.

What stops it from selling

Employers want to post a vacancy by phone, but the site shows no phone number

What it costs the business. The owner of a small shop or cafe in Samarkand often will not fill in a form: it is easier to call and explain what kind of employee is needed. Unable to find a number, they go back to search and call a different job board. For a portal that earns money from vacancy postings, that is a lost paying customer, not just a lost visitor.

What we do. We put the number in the header on every page and make it tappable, so a call starts with a single touch on a phone. About an hour of work.

There is no way to apply or ask a question via Telegram or WhatsApp

What it costs the business. Job seekers and employers in Uzbekistan are used to sorting things out by chat, especially in the evenings and on weekends. Without a messenger button, those inquiries simply never happen, and these losses do not show up in the site's statistics, so it is easy to be unaware of them for years.

What we do. We add Telegram and WhatsApp buttons to the header and a floating button on the mobile version, with a pre-filled first message: "I want to post a vacancy" or "I need help with an application." A few hours.

The vacancy pages look as if the site has not been updated in a long time

What it costs the business. The blocks are laid out for a single screen size, so on a newer phone or a wide monitor you get gaps and overlaps. For a job board this is especially painful: most job seekers arrive from a phone, and an employer judges from the first impression whether the project is alive and whether candidates will actually see their vacancy.

What we do. We rebuild the pages on a modern foundation: same colors and logo, but the blocks adapt to any screen, and the vacancy list and application form are comfortable to use on a phone. One to two weeks.

An employer has nothing to confirm that this job board is worth paying for

What it costs the business. We found no reviews on the site, no examples of posted and filled vacancies, and not a single guarantee. An employer choosing a platform for the first time looks for exactly this: someone who has already posted here and found an employee. Without it, the decision comes down to price, and there is always a cheaper platform or a free Telegram group.

What we do. We collect employer reviews with names and company names, publish several examples of vacancies that were "posted and filled," and spell out the posting terms in plain words. A few days, including gathering the material.

A Russian-speaking and an Uzbek-speaking job seeker may land on the wrong version of the site

What it costs the business. In Samarkand people search for jobs in both Russian and Uzbek, and their queries differ. Without a link between the language versions, Google treats them as separate competing pages and shows one or the other, instead of showing each person their own language.

What we do. We connect the language versions to each other the way Google expects. A few hours, if both versions already exist.

A public visitor counter sits at the bottom of the page

What it costs the business. A job board sells reach: how many people will see a listing. A public traffic number works against such a project if it is modest, and the badge itself gives away the age of the site before a person has read the first vacancy.

What we do. We remove the counter from the page and set up proper analytics that only you can see: where visitors came from, which vacancies they view, and where they abandon an application. About half an hour.

What this gives

An employer who is ready to post a vacancy finds a phone number or a messenger button right away and does not leave for another platform.

The pages open properly on a phone, and the site looks like a living project that is worth posting on.

The job board gains reviews and examples of filled vacancies, so the employer's decision no longer comes down to comparing prices.

Russian-speaking and Uzbek-speaking visitors land on their own version of the site. A full rebuild is priced by our estimate in the range shown below; the small fixes from the list (phone number, messengers, counter, languages) take hours and can go first.

What this costs

Out of every hundred people who reach the site ready to get in touch, roughly 40–69 are lost at these points.

This is an estimate based on our own stated assumptions, not a measurement of someone else's analytics: we do not know this site's traffic and do not make it up. We count per hundred visitors, and the share of every item is open in our code.
